"White girls like you. Creepin up, takin our men. The whole world aint enough, you gotta conquer ours too"
- Nikki played by Bianca Lawson (Save The Last Dance 2001)

It really says something that in this movie they decided to make the Black Woman pointing out the white girl’s privilege, be the villain.

Yup. She was the villain and we were supposed to sympathize with the poor lone white girl who was just trying to ‘fit in’.

They actually pull this twice in the film because Kerry Washington’s character (Derek’s sister) speaks and defends Nikki, telling her that yes, you are a white girl, and your privilege gives you the benefit of pretending to be black, and then they vilify her too.
But honestly this movie was some bullshit, because they made Nikki out to be bitter, only to have the lone white girl stand up for herself against the mean black girl. But hold up, because Fredro Starr’s character tells her the same shit, only more blunt, less polite, and less profound “You’re like milk and he’s like oil you just don’t mix.”…but no one says shit to him doe.
Let’s talk about how she got into Julliard because she learned some cool black dances like the “Heel Toe” for example. I don’t see the Bianca’s in the world getting Julliard scholarships for doing moves that been apart of the Black Community since ever. I mean the reasons we’re given to sympathize with Julia Childs character is some side eye worthy shit.
She’s from working class, living with a single parent, loss a parent in an crucial time in her life. Like I’m sure a good chunk of those Black kids living in Chicago, experience the same shit, but loner white girl is the “special snowflake” doe.

I used to empathize with that little white girl too, but now that I’m so much older, Bianca is the voice for black girls! I thought it was such a good movie, but it totally made it all about White Girl Privilege and made Bianca and Kerry Washington’s character out to be the “delusional” mean black girls. I always knew Bianca’s line meant something, but I thought, “The movie says she’s wrong, so I guess they’re right.” But I thought, “She’s right. White girls already got white men who be conquering shit too, but not only do they have them, they have to take the only support system we could possibly have.” When black girls say, “White girls are taking our men.” They mean it figuratively. They mean, “White girls are turning the sole support we have against us too.”

All of this! but I can gladly say when I first saw this movie, I never really sympathized with Stile’s character.

But Nikki was a bully. She was not speaking for me then, and she sure isn’t speaking for me now. Nikki is the girl who’d isolate dark skinned African girls with accents at school because she could. She’s the girl who’d pretend to be your friend just to get the tea, then she’d tell everybody your business. Nikki is the girl who’d go after your man whether you were white or black.
Nikki did not speak for me, and all this new consciousness about how she was really speaking for black girls everywhere is crap.

It doesn’t matter who you think she was. They used her personality and “mean girl” trope to justify why black women who have said the same thing Nikki has said long before the movie are “wrong” and just “hating.” I am suspicious as to why after you read the commentary, you still insist she was just a “bully” who had nothing valid to say even though everything she said to Stiles’ character made perfect sense. They made Nikki unlikable SO you wouldn’t empathize with her logic about white privilege white women have. Just like you kind of just did with your assumption she would isolate the dark-skinned African girls with “heavy accents.” You tried to use the, “Nikki is light-skint, so she’s probably colorstruck!” so I wouldn’t credit her as being truthful for all black women’s plights. I don’t care what a black woman looks like or is, what she said still held truth then and it holds truth today. No one would listen to Nikki if she were dark-skinned either, so…

This is literally why I get super annoyed with all those ridiculous ancient egypt memes like pls shut the fuck up and stop using dead people in your bs respectability politics

This is because people have been taught to hate West Africa as a less-pretty, less-civilized, less-romantic-sounding region of Africa.
It’s why some of these folks can list all of the Egyptian gods, pharaohs, and lineages, but can’t tell you shit about the Mali Empire, list any of the Orisa, or know jackshit about the Kingdom of Benin.
Because West Africa is demonized as where all the ‘savages of Africa’ come from.

okay but why are non-Black East Asian people calling people out for cultural appropriation while wearing some unnecessary ass box braids because i wanna know… why does everyone feel like Black culture is to be invalidated as significant enough to be respected?
